Fernando Alonso’s Indy 500 orientation takes over the Internet
If Fernando Alonso’s Month of May was intended to generate international interest in the 101st Indianapolis 500, consider the early returns an overwhelming success.
The live online coverage of his rookie orientation test program was viewed over two million times and continues to be watched via an on-demand basis. In fact, the United Kingdom was the top-rated region of consumption for the Facebook Live stream of the test.
The live stream trended on YouTube and outpaced the trailer for ‘The Dark Tower,’ a Hollywood adaptation of a Stephen King novel. It also performed better than Jimmy Kimmel’s reveal of his son’s birth and a Chris Rock video.
Further, 30 percent of all web traffic for IndyCar.com originated from Europe.
While YouTube‘s unique viewer total is not final, it’s expected to be in excess of 1 million total viewers. ‘Fernando Alonso’ was the second-most searched term in Spain Wednesday while #AlonsoRunsIndy trended in at least seven countries, including the United States, UK, Spainm Brazil, Italy, Ireland and Poland.
The #Indy500 hashtag also trended in several contries, including Colombia, Canada, Mexico and Vietnam.
The two-time Formula 1 World Champion is expected to galvanize interest in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing for a European market that has stereotypically viewed the 500-mile showdown with skepticism for its perceived danger and talent level.
