NASCAR community bands together to aid artist Sam Bass
The NASCAR community is coming together to help one of their own as motorsports artist Sam Bass needs $350,000 for a kidney and pancreas transplant.
Bass has spent the past several years fighting complications resulting from his Type 1 diabetes. In 2014, a blood infection led to septic shock and he required four surgeries over three weeks to overcome the battle.
On Wednesday, Bass is expected to sell over 250 pieces of officially licensed NASCAR art as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Several drivers, including Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon are also pitching into a fundraising account, with several more expected to follow.

The 54-year-old released a statement over the weekend that said the bankruptcy stemmed from every aspect of his life, both professionally and health related. He lost several clients over the past decades and designs far fewer paint schemes that he did in the 1990s and early 2000s.
That’s taken a toll on his business.
“Despite our best efforts to reorganize under a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the court has ordered an auction of work spanning my career–including original paintings, guitars and numerous items acquired over the years as gifts from teams and samples of items I’ve been fortunate enough to design for sponsors,” Bass said. “Although the auction is not at all by choice, the most important thing is that I love what I do and I have no plans to stop working.
“I plan to continue creating and designing through my dialysis treatment, and after any anticipated surgeries, I’ll be back stronger than ever. I hope that the partners within the NASCAR garage and fans, alike, will continue to view my work as the premier design and illustration option within the NASCAR industry.”
Bass has a GoFundMe account that can be accessed here. The Motor Racing Outreach program has also set up a website where donations can be made to the artists’ cause and that can be viewed here.
Bass is most notable for designing the paint schemes on cars driven by Jeff Gordon for over 20 seasons. Bass has done artwork in NASCAR since 1981 and has designed program covers for Charlotte Motor Speedway since 1985. For more details on the auction, check out ironhorseauction.com.
“Last, but not least, I’d like to thank the incredible individuals in the garage who have banded together to support me through their generous efforts being handled by MRO,” Bass said. “The NASCAR garage is like a family and I’m so fortunate to be a part of it.”
