Sammy Johns takes over as Austin Dillon's NASCAR crew chief at Richmond
Richard Childress Racing director of operations Sammy Johns will replace Slugger Labbe as crew chief for the No. 3 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolet driven by Austin Dillon this weekend at Richmond International Raceway.
Labbe will remain at the team shop in Welcome, North Carolina, to finish the cars for next weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.
The flagship No. 3 team has gotten off to a slow start this season, with an average finish of 19.5 through the first eight races. Dillon is 21st in the championship standings and 14 points out of a playoff spot.
In other Dillon related news, the No. 3 failed the laser inspection station five times last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. NASCAR has penalized the team with 30 minutes of practice, the loss of pit stall selection and it will have to start from the rear on Sunday afternoon.
